Celebrate GCEF Projects in the Park!

Fun Filled Day in the Park

Saturday, Oct. 14,  11 am – 3pm
Central Plaza, McGolrick Park

Join the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) for the 2nd annual OpenHouseGCEF — a fun-filled day for all ages. OpenHouseGCEF will celebrate McGolrick Park as a centerpiece of life in Greenpoint and feature many of the exciting projects GCEF is funding that are making our community a healthier, safer, and “greener” place to live.

Schedule of Activities
11:00 am – 2:00 pm: Dogs of McGolrick Park “Meet-up” and Contest at the McGolrick Park Dog Run! Enter your furry companion to take a prize in categories like… Best Eyes, Highest Jump, Fastest Fetch, Waggiest Tail, Friendliest, Biggest and Smallest Dog. Judging is at 1:30pm.

Noon: Join a Bird and Tree Identification Walk with For the Birds/Greening Greenpoint! Listen to a story-time of popular children’s green picture books with the Greenpoint Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.

1:00 pm: Participate in a Scavenger Hunt to plant daffodil bulbs around McGolrick Park with MPNA.

1:30 pm: Join the Green Out Of Grey: Neighborhood Walk with NYC Soil & Water to learn about greening industrial spaces in Eastern Greenpoint. Rain or shine!

2:00 pm: Listen to a story-time of popular children’s green picture books with the Greenpoint Library.

All day Activities:
Listen to the sound of jazz from the Nicki Adams Trio
Make a craft from herbal teabags to wildflower seed packets and necklaces, from coloring environmental pictures to creating paper airplanes in the shape of bird wings
Kids can come by, design a robot and take it on an underwater mission
Play hop-scotch or tic-tac-toe and be part of creating a big map of environmental projects in Greenpoint
Get a photo of yourself in a pollinator (think bee!) or flower mask
Pick-up a free plant
Peddle a bike to make compost or applesauce
Get up and personal with a touch tank of critters from Newtown Creek
Hope for blue skies, the event will be cancelled in the event of rain!

Citizen Gardener Certificate – Workshops at McGolrick!

2 Dates · Oct 6 – Nov 3

Master gardeners from the Horticultural Society of New York will host a Citizen Gardener Certificate Program over two Saturdays this fall.

Each workshop lasts four hours. You will spend time caring for the restored lawns and garden beds at McGolrick, and learn to plant, weed, prune, compost, water, mulch and naturally control pests and disease!

The course is free to attend. Each person who attends both workshops for full 8 hours total will be awarded a Citizen Gardener Certificate upon completion.

This  2006 Pixar animated comedy-adventure takes off with hot-shot race-car, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson)   traveling to California to race against the King (Richard Petty) and Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton) for the Piston Cup Championship. But, he becomes lost after falling out of his trailer in the rundown Radiator Springs. While there he slowly befriends the town’s odd residents, including Sally (Bonnie Hunt), Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). When it comes time for him to leave to championship is no longer his top priority.

Join NYC Parks and New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment for this free family film!

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s eponymous collective works and inspired by Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film of the same name, The Jungle Book is a live-action/CGI film that tells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who, guided by his animal guardians, sets out on a journey of self-discovery while evading the threatening Shere Khan. The film introduces Neel Sethi as Mowgli and also features the voices of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, and Christopher Walken. This wonderful film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Young Naturalists Program at McGolrick Park

Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 2 pm.
Classes run from 10am to 11 am, and educators are on hand until 2pm

Find the naturalists on the south side of the pavilion.

The Horticultural Society of New York is behind a major renovation about to begin in the park, which will involve reconditioning lawns, restoring garden beds, improving the dog run as well as engaging the community in stewarding the park. The youngest community members are invited to the park this July and August to participate in the Young Naturalist Program for hands-on gardening activities designed to enhance understanding of the natural world in an urban setting.

Bring your little environmentalists to learn about park critters (Tuesdays), paint in the park (Wednesdays), exploration walks (Thursdays), gardening (Fridays) and planting workshops (Saturdays).

A Guided Tree Walk

Join Sophie Plitt of Greening Greenpoint on a walk through McGolrick to learn about its trees and how to get involved with the park!

We’ll be meeting in beautiful McGolrick Park in Greenpoint for a guided tree walk. McGolrick park is known for it’s dense canopy of mature, shady trees. Together we’ll look at these trees, learn the various species growing in the park, and share some tips for identifying trees in NYC. From towering London Plane trees to small, flowering Eastern Red Bud, we’ll take time to look at each leaf, flower, fruit and bud.

On this walk you’ll also learn about Greening Greenpoint and the McGolrick Park Neighborhood Alliance. MPNA is a group of organized community leaders and residents working to improve McGolrick Park and our neighborhood. Find out how you can become a part of this organization and help to steward this beautiful park.

OSA Town Hall Meeting

When: Tuesday, October 25, 6:30 pm – 8 pm

Where: McCarren Play Center, 776 Lorimer (between Driggs and Bayard)

Who: – Neighbors who love their parks and want to see more parks and better-kept, safer parks with more programming
– Leaders from OSA partners such as El Puente, Greenpoint Williamsburg Soccer League (GWYSL), McGolrick Park Neighborhood Association (MPNA) and Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park (FBIP), among other groups, are expected to attend

What: Brief review of 2016 activities; quick overview of 2017; and an extended public discussion, providing direction to OSA board and staff facilitated by Tupper Thomas, the executive director of New Yorkers for Parks.

Food and Drinks? Yes! A complimentary buffet dinner and drinks will be served

Why Attend? >> Your Parks Need You! NYC spends only half of 1% of its budget on parks and is under tremendous fiscal pressure, so its capacity to maintain and invest in parks is limited. OSA can provide valuable resources to supplement the City’s maintenance and programming of parks, but only if OSA raises enough money to reach critical mass with a core group of employees and broadly expanded programs, and only if OSA engages enough local residents.

Topics: We’ll review OSA’s progress and shortcomings in supporting the parks throughout CB1 and we’ll discuss OSA’s priorities going forward, including:

Facilitator: Tupper Thomas, the executive director of New Yorkers for Parks. Thomas was chief administrator of Prospect Park for 31 years and founding president of the Prospect Park Alliance for 23 years.

ComCom: The OSA Town Hall Meeting will serve as the annual meeting of OSA’s Community Committee (ComCom), an independent standing committee of the OSA board composed of volunteer park stakeholders.

Join the GCEF – funded Newtown Creek Wildflower Roof and Community Space for the first of many public environmental education events to come. On Saturday, October 8th from 5:00pm to 7:30pm, come explore our newly-installed green roof and hear renowned British environmental journalist Michael McCarthy speak about his new book, Nature and Joy: A New Defense of the Natural World. The talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing with the author.
